KY Powerball winners claim $1M checks

Ralph and Tonkie Staples

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Three Kentucky residents became millionaires Monday after they picked up their prize checks from Kentucky Lottery Headquarters in downtown Louisville.

Two of the winners wished to remain anonymous. One won a $1 million Powerball prize from the May 15 drawing. That ticket was sold at Smitty's in Radcliff. Another won in the May 18 drawing with a ticket sold at the Thornton's in Buckner.

The third winner was Ralph Staples of Paynesville. The 71-year-old retired plumber bought his ticket for the May 18 drawing at the Basham's Corner Mart in Vine Grove. Friends say Staples has been playing for the last 20+ years and plays his numbers daily at Basham's.

"I'm not going to build no $300 or $400,000 house and buy no $50,000 vehicles," said Staples.

Staples told Kentucky Lottery officials he plans on getting some nice funeral plots and headstones for himself and his wife, Tonkie.

BRANDENBURG, KY (WAVE) - The U.S. Army awarded Civilian Awards for Humanitarian Services to two Brandenburg, Kentucky first responders whose quick thinking and technical skills saved the life of a 17 year old in cardiac arrest.

In a ceremony Thursday morning at the Meade County Fire Department, Brig. Gen. Margarett Barnes awarded Officer Todd Matti of the Brandenburg Police Department and Chief Larry Naser of the Meade County Fire Protection District with the awards.

On August 29, 2012, Wyatt Bean collapsed onto a teammate at Meade County High School during track practice and went into cardiac arrest.

"Everyone was like ‘Bean get up! Bean get up!' because I am a jokester," Wyatt said. "Then my whole body started shaking, and my ankles were caught under the fence, and so my teammates started holding me down."
