Louisville, Ky. - This is a photo taken from the 2nd St. bridge in 1922, with a present-day photo shot from the exact location. 

Then (black and white overlay): In 1922, a large new sign on top of Louisville Gas and Electric Company’s Waterside Station establishes Louisville as the "Gateway to the South."

Now (color background): In 2013, the city’s Waterfront has been transformed, in part, with the addition of the YUM! Center.

FRANKFORT, KY – Looking for that perfect place to celebrate Valentine’s Day? Consider a Kentucky State Park. Many parks are offering special events and packages in February to help celebrate Valentine’s Day.

State parks provide a great place for a getaway weekend along with excellent food, entertainment, natural beauty and scenery. FRANKFORT, KY – The 2013 Kentucky Official Highway Map is now available across the Commonwealth at rest areas, welcome centers, local convention and tourism offices and all Kentucky State Parks.

As always, the new map contains a wealth of information for motorists. At the same time, its “Only One Kentucky” theme highlights the beauty, natural attractions and features unique to Kentucky:

FRANKFORT, KY - The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) seeks volunteer docents to lead public tours of the Old State Capitol. An open house will be held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, for all who are interested in learning about the docent program.

FRANKFORT, KY -  A 15-year-old high school student working toward her Girl Scout Gold Award presented her nomination of Buck Creek Rosenwald School for the National Register of Historic Places during a meeting of the Kentucky Historic Preservation Review Board at Paul Sawyier Public Library, Frankfort.

Julia Bache, a sophomore at Kentucky Country Day School, is a direct descendant of Benjamin Franklin and said she became interested in history after attending a reunion in 2006 commemorating his 300th birthday.

FRANKFORT, KY - The Old Governor’s Mansion in Frankfort is being transformed into an “inspired Christmas in a historical setting,” showcasing the talents and creativity of 11 designers from throughout Kentucky.  Presented by Flower Magazine and L.V. Harkness, the mansion will be open to the public for daily tours starting today through Sunday, Dec. 9. 

“The Old Governor’s Mansion holds a particularly special place in my heart because it was our home when Steve was lieutenant governor,” said Mrs. Beshear. “Since that time, the mansion has been beautifully restored and now is the perfect backdrop for Kentucky designers to display their creative and decorative talents. I encourage everyone to visit the mansion during this event and truly experience a beautiful and historical Kentucky Christmas.”

LG&E and KU accepting grant applications to fund qualified tree-planting projects

Louisville, Ky. — Applications are now available for "Plant for the Planet" grants from Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company to fund qualified tree-plantings by nonprofit or government entities.

The program awards matching grants in amounts of $500 to $5,000 to organizations with a history of successful tree plantings in the LG&E and KU service territories.

"Plant for the Planet has helped sustain and beautify a variety of sites, from mature woodlands to busy highways," said Laura Douglas, Vice President of Corporate Responsibility and Community Affairs for LG&E and KU.
